CLAT-UG Exam Eligibility

You must make sure to satisfy the eligibility criteria before filling the CLAT Application Form. If you fail to meet the eligibility criteria, you will be debarred from the procedure of recruitment without any further notice or intimation.

The eligibility will be measured considering three major factors as mentioned below:

CLAT-UG Age Limit

As per the updated guidelines, there will be no upper age limit for UG Program. However, the minimum age limit should be above 17 years.

CLAT-UG Nationality

As per the official notification, Indian Nationals, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), Foreign Nationals are eligible to apply for the CLAT-UG.

CLAT-UG Educational Qualification

. If you belong to the General / OBC / PWD / NRI / PIO / OCI categories, then you must have secured 45% marks in the Senior Secondary School Examination/ 12th Board Examination.

. Those belonging to SC/ST categories must have secured 40% marks in the 12th standard.

 

CLAT-UG Eligibility - General Criteria

All those who are appearing in the 12th Standard examination in March/April are also eligible to fill the application form for CLAT Exam. However, they should submit the result of the 12th standard examination at the time of admission.

If you fail to submit the result at the time of admission, you will lose your chance of admission to the desired law school. If there is a case of equal marks, the following tie-breaking procedure will be practiced by the exam conducting body:

  • An applicant with higher marks in Legal Aptitude will be preferred.

  • If the tie still exists, then applicants of higher age will be preferred.

  • If the tier continues to exist, then a computerized draw is done to decide the rank.

CLAT Eligibility Criteria for Non-Resident Indian (NRI)

The admissions for NRI/NRI sponsored category aspirants are carried out on the basis of their CLAT merit and the seats will be allocated by the concerned university under NRI Quota.

1. Candidates applying for NRI category must appear for CLAT for those NLUs that require CLAT Exam as a requirement for admission to the category.

2. The CLAT Office will be responsible for releasing a list of candidates who are eligible for admission in this category.

3. In other circumstances, candidates must visit the respective universities they want to attend to know if CLAT is a requirement for admissions in NRI category.

4. You should contact the concerned university directly for admission formalities, eligibility, documents required, and other related queries for seeking admission under NRI Quota.

6. A total of 17 seats are there for the aspirants who wish for admissions in the UG Programs. On the other hand, there will be no seat for the students seeking admissions for the PG Program.

Documents Required for NRI Candidates at the time of CLAT Admission

If you belong to the NRI category, you need to submit the below-mentioned documents at the time of admission.

1. Copy of Valid Indian Passport of the Student

2. Copy of Visas acquired in the last 12 months

3. Certificate from the local embassy stating that the person is an NRI/OCI or PIO Card

Sponsors for NRI Students

1. The person who willingly sponsors candidates for admission is required to be a first-degree relation of the student and shall be residing abroad as a Non-Resident Indian.

2. In case the student has no parents or near relatives or is taken as a ward by some other nearest relative, such students also may be considered for admission.

3. The guardian must have legally treated the applying candidate as a ward. Such guardians shall file an affidavit mentioning the interest in the education of the candidate and also their relationship with the candidate.

4. It is mandatory for that person to also be a Non-Resident Indian and ordinarily residing abroad.

CLAT Admissions: Documents Required by NRI Sponsored Candidates

1. Copy of Valid Indian Passport of the Sponsor

2. Copy of Visas obtained in the last 12 months by the Sponsor

3. Certificate from the local embassy stating that the Sponsor is an NRI/ OCI or PIO Card

4. An affidavit by the sponsor indicating the interest shown in the education affairs of the student and willingness to fund the education of the student over the next 5 years.

Q. I am appearing for the class 12 board exams, am I eligible for the CLAT ?

Yes. As per the notification, those appearing for the class 12 or equivalent exam can apply for the CLAT exam.

Q. What is the required percentage to appear for the CLAT exam?

To be eligible for the Common Law Admission Test, you must have obtained:

  • Forty-five percent (45%) marks in Qualifying Exam (Class XII examination) if you belong to Unreserved /OBC /Specially Abled Persons (SAP) and other categories.

  • Forty Percent (40%) for the SC/ST categories.
